Sarah Cain, Forget me not (2011)
September 26 - December 18, 2011
Masonic Lodge (Marfa, TX)

Sarah Cain, Untitled (Marfa), sparay paint, acrylic, gouache, silver leaf, gold leaf, dresser, butterfly, toy car, glass bottle, grass, geode, plastic, bells, on wall and dresser, 2011.

Los Angeles-based artist Sarah Cain's practice focuses around connecting painting, sculpture, and architecture. Creating site-specific paintings that respond directly to their environment, Cain investigates physical, emotional, and psychic space.

As part of LAND's multi-site, multi-artist exhibition Nothing Beside Remains, to take place in Marfa, TX throughout the fall of 2011 and into 2012, Cain will create a site-specific installation for the first floor of the former Masonic Lodge entitled Forget me not. A series of new paintings, this installation explores, in both concept and imagery, the forget-me-not flower - a Masonic symbol later co-opted unknowingly by the Nazi's. Conceptually, Forget me not deals with themes such as belief systems and doubt, double meanings and faith.

Sarah Cain has had solo exhibitions at Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara (2011), Bryan Miller Gallery, Houston (2010), Sara Meltzer Gallery, New York (2009, 2010); Anne Mosseri-Marlio Galerie, Zurich (2009); Anthony Meier Fine Arts, San Francisco (2006, 2009); Five Thirty Three, Los Angeles (2009); and Queens Nails Annex, San Francisco (2005). Select Group exhibitions include The 2008 California Biennial, Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach (2008); The 2006 SECA Art Award, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco (2007); Busan Biennale, Busan, Korea (2007); and Like Color in Pictures, Aspen Art Museum, Aspen, Colorado (2006). She has a forthcoming solo exhibition at Honor Fraser, Los Angeles (2012). Cain will be included in the group exhibitions Two Schools of Cool at the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach (2011), Fifty Years of Bay Area Art: The SECA Awards, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco (2011), and Gold, Imperial BELVEDERE Palace Museum. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
